Rebecca J. Smith graduated from the PA program at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, in 2004. Before beginning her education as a PA, she received an undergraduate degree in Biology from Newman University and has worked within the medical community for eight years.
Physician assistants, PAs, are healthcare professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. PAs perform physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret lab tests, assist in surgery, provide patient education and in virtually all states can prescribe medications.
There are currently 136 accredited PA programs. Because of the close working relationship PAs have with physicians, PAs are educated in the medical model designed to complement physician training. This training consists of studies in medical and behavioral sciences (anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis), followed by 2,000 hours of clinical rotations in various settings including surgery.
PAs receive their national certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Only graduates of an accredited PA program are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). To remain nationally certified, PAs must complete 100 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every 2 years, and pass a national recertification examination every 6 years.
